“I became a filmmaker to tell the stories
that might otherwise go untold. “
- Mustafa Davis
I picked up my first camera at age 11, developing film in a makeshift darkroom my stepfather built in our hall closet. Watching images come to life in chemical trays was otherworldly, and I knew storytelling would be my life’s work.
In 1996, I embraced Islam and traded my cameras for books, setting off on a decade-long journey to study sacred knowledge in Mauritania, Syria, Sudan, Morocco, and Yemen. The lives, traditions, and wisdom I was experiencing carried stories that needed to be told. I was immersed in a world that I felt compelled to share with others. With the guidance and blessings of my teachers, I returned to the U.S., enrolled in film school in Hollywood, and picked up my cameras again—this time with purpose.
Since then, I’ve directed films and media projects around the world, co-founded Ta’leef Collective, Guidance Media, and Anwar Al-Talaqi (Guidance Magazine), and led media efforts at Tabah Foundation in Abu Dhabi, where I helped build its award-winning media division. My films have been showcased on PBS, POV, The Atlantic, WNET, and Amazon Prime.
Through my media agency, Mustafa Davis Studios, we partner with organizations, startups, and global brands to craft authentic, impactful narratives through film, digital media, and branding strategy.
